Description

Detailed Description
During Prohibition, Old Grand-Dad was produced by a pharmaceutical company, the American Medicinal Spirits Co., and was one of the few distilled spirits permitted to be prescribed as medicine.
Old Grand-Dad was a distiller named Basil Hayden who made his name by distilling a bourbon whiskey made with a higher percentage of rye. Basil Hayden passed along the art of distilling to his son and then, in turn, to his grandson. It was the third generation distiller, Colonel R.B. Hayden, who honored his grandfather by naming his justly famed whiskey “Old Grand-Dad.”
Old Grand Dad 114 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Tasting Notes
Nose: Heavy on the ethanol right after being poured. As the ethanol dissipated, pleasant aromas of rye spice and brown sugar gave way to traditional oak and caramel notes.
Palate: The boldness of this bourbon cannot be understated. There’s a ton of spice from the high rye mash, but  the softness of dark fruits, oak, and vanilla still manage to come through. The alcohol can overpower you at times, but it doesn’t make this a hard drinking bourbon.
Finish: Be ready for a long finish that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The spices of cinnamon and red hots overwhelm the back of the tongue while slowly dissipating over a few minutes.
Distillery Information
After settling in Kentucky, Beam began harvesting corn and set forth a family tradition by distilling the excess grains he harvested into whiskey. Since then, seven generations of the Beam family have been involved in whiskey production for the eponymous company.
